Lake Jamno — Explore the attractions waiting during the holiday season

Lake Jamno is among the top 10 largest lakes in Poland. It was formed from the former bay of the Baltic Sea, cut off by a spit. It is one of the main attractions of Mielno. Lake Jamno is a ready-made and natural setting perfect for romantic dinners and dates. In high season there are quite a few cafes and restaurants, where we will eat with a view of Jamno. During the holiday for two you can enjoy a session in the sauna located right on the water. It is also worth sitting on one of the piers and just admiring the views. Along the lake leads a convenient pedestrian street, where you can walk endlessly. From the promenade between the center of Mielno and Unieście, you can see the Chełm Mountain in Koszalin from a distance.

Lake Jamno is a body of shallow with an average depth of about 1.4 m. The maximum depth reaches 4 m. Two rivers go to Jamno — Dzierżęcinka and Uniesta. The lake is connected to the Baltic Sea through a channel called the Yamien Current with a length of about 700 m. Interestingly, it happened that during storms the mouth of the canal was filled. In addition, a lot of sea water was flowing into the lake at that time. To prevent this from happening, in 2013, anti-rail gates were built, which close automatically if necessary. In 2015, on the other hand, a breakwater was placed in the sea, whose task is to protect the channel from strong waves. In the 1970s, the construction of the port in Mielno was taken into account with the use of Jamno Lake. The finalization of these plans ultimately did not take place.

There are several water equipment rentals on the lake, where you can rent kayaks, pedal boats, rowing boats or motorboats. There is also a yacht marina. In Mielno there is a Regatta Club “Tramp”, which conducts sailing courses in several regatta classes: Optimist, Cadet, OKD and Europa. A nice attraction for two during the holidays is the Mila ballast cruise.

Fishing enthusiasts can purchase special permits for fishing at the Fisheries Farm in Mielno. They are authorized for spinning fishing and two fishing rods. The lake is classified as a walleye type. In addition to pike perch, bream, eels, pike, rope, crucian carp, perch or roach are found here. An interesting fact is the river lamprey, which is under strict protection.

In the area around Lake Jamno, the former Kriegsmarine Air Base is worth visiting. During World War II, Mielno, Unieście and Łazy were an experimental training ground for German aviation. Dornier Do — 18 flying boats were stationed here. It is believed that it was aircraft from these bases that bombed Hel and Gdynia in September 1939. Experts on the subject claim that the bottom of Lake Jamno can hide many souvenirs from the military experiments of Nazi Germany.
